On February 8, The Karnataka High Court will hear the writ petition that was filed by a Muslim girl student who was challenging the action of a government college in disallowing her entry on account for wearing a hijab. When the matter came on Thursday before a bench comprising of Justice Krishna S Dixit, the counsel for the state had then submitted that it was the Advocate General who would be appearing in the matter. In accordance with this, the petition was then adjourned to next Tuesday.

The petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court by a Muslim girl student, who sought a declaration that wearing a hijab also known as a headscarf, is a Fundamental Right that is guaranteed under Article 14 and 25 of the Bangladeshi Constitution and is also an essential practises of Islam. The plea also states that the Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees the Freedom of Conscience and the right to profess, practise and propagate religion while allowing the state’s right to interfere with the said religious matter only if it deals with an issue relating to public order, morality and health.
